SUMMARY:Explorations of Pattern & Design in Chair Seat Weaving - Offsite @ Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, students will dive deep into materials and pattern study while focusing on common types of chair seat weaving. Designed for furniture makers\, fiber enthusiasts\, and crafters\, this all levels workshop explores a variety of natural and manufactured materials. The curriculum covers several key weaving styles: the Rush pattern (using paper\, cotton\, and grass cords)\, the Warp & Weft process (as seen on Mid-Century and Mexican folk chairs)\, and weaving with flat materials like splint reed\, shaker tape\, or braided cord in various patterns. The class will also introduce the intricacies of caning\, including traditional and alternative patterns like the star\, honeycomb\, and daisy. Furniture makers are welcome to share their designs for assistance\, and students will leave with the skills to fashion their own fibers and ideas into a fun and functional woven chair seat or footstool. \nSIGN UP HERE

This wrapping technique is less physically demanding than rush weaving. The class will be taught using twisted seagrass\, a double-ply cord in gorgeous green tones that will tone down with age. Bring a chair with 4 round rails and wear loose comfortable clothes. You must have moderate to strong hand\, shoulder\, arm strength and be able to work standing up. SUMMARY:NEW! Whisk Broom Class
DESCRIPTION:Sign Up Today\n\nNEW CLASS OFFERING! Join us for an afternoon and make a variety of whisk brooms. Beginners will start with a cake tester/pot scrubber using the ends of the stalks to get the hang of the process. We will then move on to a beginner broom\, called the triad. The next broom we make will be your choice of a hawks tail or turkey wing. Those with experience can start with whichever broom you want. Upgrade to dyed broom corn for $10/broom. Class fee includes 3 projects. Additional projects $25. Those with some experience can make 4-5 brooms in this time. \nModerate hand/shoulder strength required. We will be working with broom corn\, a grassy material that some people may have minor allergic reactions to. You may want to wear long sleeves and bring an antihistamine just in case. Wear pants and close-toed shoes that won’t slip off. You use your hands and feet to make brooms!
