Splint & Shaker Tape at Sawtooth
(10 pm-4pm)

Sawtooth School for Visual Art in Winston-Salem, NC.

We regret that we had to cancel the class due to low sign up, combined with extended time away from the chairs in Asheville after dealing with an injury, a death in the family, and the loss of our two assistants in the fall. Were there more sign ups, we would have made that happen. As it was, with only 1 sign up and the likelihood of the class being cancelled anyway, we just decided to pull the trigger. We are very grateful to the director of the wood shop at Sawtooth, Eddie Fitzgerald for all of his work on this collaboration.

Join visiting artist Brandy Clements of Silver River Center for Chair Caning (Asheville, NC) for an intensive introduction to the art & craft of caning! Learn the foundational tools, materials, and techniques of caning while weaving a colorful & comfortable Shaker tape chair on Friday, and a splint-reed seat on Saturday. At the end of the workshop you will have a couple of family heirlooms to use at home and treasure for generations.

Students will need to bring two chairs to work on in class. Sawtooth will contact you with more information after you enroll for the class. Brandy will also have chair frames available to purchase for a nominal fee. All other tools materials are included in class fee. Brandy will contact you two weeks before the start of class regarding chair preparation.
