The Woven Chair instructional book

Our new instructional book, The Woven Chair, published by Blue Hills Press in September 2025, represents distilled knowledge from 10 years of teaching the traditional craft of chair seat weaving to all ages and skill levels.

The Woven Chair is focused on Seat Weaving and includes anything that can be done on 4 rails: rush, splint, Shaker tape, and Danish cord. We go into special cases like split rails and alternate patterns for rush. We have instructions for the Yugoslavian Folding Chair. Advanced materials like hickory bark and natural rush are introduced. Each chapter has design tips for furniture makers too! The beginning of the book has a structural repair section and a materials, tools, and skills library. The end of the book has an extended reference section with suppliers, chair weaving as a business, ergonomics, pattern mapping, and how to find your chair weaving community. And we are proud to include contemporary weavers and makers weaving amazing chairs in our inspiration gallery.

We have written and photographed a second book focused on Chair Caning, hand-woven and machine woven, special patterns, advanced frame construction, and other rattan projects like the Old Hickory Furniture style open weave binder cane pattern and Hans Wegner’s “The Chair” 501 Round Chair. This book has yet to be edited (as of 2025) and if you would like to see it as much as we do, contact the publisher to express interest in seeing this book come to fruition. Info follows.
