General: Splint weaving is also called “split weaving” because the authentic bark material was split off of a tree (usually hickory or oak). We will be using ½” flat reed, which is manufactured from the inside of the rattan tree. ½” width material is the best introduction to this style of weaving. The skills learned are applicable to other materials including binder cane and larger/smaller versions of splint reed.

Class Length: 1 Session [10am-4pm]; Each project timeline varies depending on how cooperative your chair is. You may need more time and you are welcome to stay until 5pm.

Class Size: 1-6 students

Class Fee: Includes 5-6 hours of instruction, ½” Splint Reed and all tools/additional materials necessary to complete your project. Additional fees for structural repairs and material for future projects.

BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair): Or notify us in advance and we can provide one for you for ~$40-60 depending on the style/amount of work involved in refurbishing.

Considerations when choosing a class project:

  • Almost any chair with 4 rails/posts is a candidate for Splint Reed. You can replace Rush, Shaker tape, Binder Cane, etc.
  • Square/rectangular or curved seat rails are not suitable for Splint Reed Weaving
  • Large rocking chairs are not suitable for this class. Due to their size and weight, restoring these chairs requires a lot of strength and more time than this class allows. Learn on a smaller chair and apply those skills to your rocker project.
  • Splint reed is not appropriate for outdoor seating…even on a covered/screened porch. Anything left in the heat/cold/moisture will mildew, rot and break.
  • You must be able to turn your chair upside down and upright frequently.

Before Class: 1 month before class we need to inspect your chair for structural issues. You can make an appointment to visit us in-person, or send us photos of your chair via text or email.

After Class: Your seat should be sealed after drying completely (overnight). We use a clear Shellac. We can do this for you, you can return and do it yourself the next day, or we can send you home with simple instructions.
